The race has begun! It’s really two races, but one is a nice paced marathon that I’m already way in the lead. The other is a mild sprint, where I am sort of lagging. In June my cousin Helen is getting married (And do you, Maggot, take Helen…). They live, along with the rest of my family, in England. As of tonight, plane tickets are about $1300 round trip (probably doesn’t include all applicable taxes and fees). I’ve got about $200 in my savings. This leaves me with five and a half months to raise about $1800 for the trip ($1300 for the flight, $500 for car help, expenses). And, there’s no guarantee that the rest of my family is going, for the same reason I may not be going.

In hopes of saving vast amounts of money, a New Year’s resolution of mine is to cook much more food at home for all meals (see my New Year’s post!). This will lead to a few good things, but my main drive for being super cheap for the next few months is to hopefully make enough to pay for this trip. Meals out average about $6-7 I’m guessing. I’m hoping to bring my cooked meals down to about $3-4 per meal. Obviously, this won’t be the only way I’m going to make it up to affording this trip quickly, but it’s a good start.

Also, this will lead to more adventurous cooking, more food photography, more blog updates on food, eating better, learning lots, etc. So really it is a good thing all around, but for some reason I’m extremely focused on saving money for this trip. This hit me suddenly about a week ago, that the trip was coming in six months, and I couldn’t rely on my parents for help.

At the least, I’ll have a good amount of money saved. Nothing wrong with that!

United will no longer be accepting cash for the meals on board their flights as of April 20. And they are apparently one of the last airlines to still take cash. There have always been jokes of a time when you can no longer use money, and I’ve always been sceptical of this actually happening, but I was obviously wrong. This makes me wonder when other, more grounded places, will mo longer accept cash.

United’s new “no cash policy” is sharpely contrasted with the fact that some businesses still don’t accept credit cards at all. Tapioca Express didn’t accept credit cards until the middle of last year, and there’s still one that doesn’t I believe. But many busiesses don’t because of profit-eating credit card processing fees, which usually range from 2-4%. So I guess now is the time to buy some stock in credit card companies.

This may be old news, but not for me. Pretty soon they’ll just stop printing money outright, and it will be a tale for grandkids: “Back when I was young, money was printed on little pieces of paper and small pieces of metal.”. And no one will belive that such a rme existed, and how on Earth (or Mars…) did we ever get along?
