I sound like a grumpy old man!
Concerts are an amazing event, as any major public gathering is. Any time you have a large group of people gathering together, there is bound to be something interesting. Concert’s are different than a lot of other events, as music is the major draw of the night, which seems to stir people more than usual because it is mind-blastingly loud. The music last night wasn’t always particularly angry, but even when it was upbeat, loud, and intense, violence seemed to permeate throughout the floor. People push, shove, get elbowed, kicked, all during a song about how much the band enjoys it’s home town. I can understand letting loose, having fun, etc., but why does violence come through for some people?

One band last night said that, “it doesn’t matter if you are black, white, gay, or straight, catholic
or protestant, but the only thing that matters tonight is punk rock!”. Everyone cheers their approval of this message, and the band continues. Later that night, right after that band’s set, near where I am sitting there is a small group of guys that start arguing with an asian couple, almost breaking into a fight were it not for the couple walking away. So, the sentiment of brotherhood lasted maybe 20 minutes? I guess ego, and the need to impress the lady sitting next to him was more important than appreciating what his idols were saying. He was probably drunk, and just needed to get home and replay the concert on Guitar Hero.
I don’t mind drinking at all at concerts, but how fun is it to the one person in a group that just has that one they shouldn’t have, then goes into the pit, and has to make a hasty retreat before they share their lunch with those around them. How is that fun? Do you remember the concert that has already cost you $50, plus the few $10 beers it took to get to this point? Or are you the butt of the joke, “dude, remember when you got drunk at the concert, and puked on that hot chick next to you?”. So much for impressing the ladies.

And the greatest laugh of all during a concert is watching those who think it’s cool to smoke pot during a concert get thrown out for doing so. I have no problem with weed, and agree that it should be legalized, if only to help lessen the tax burden on some. But it is currently not legal, and so why do some think
it’s okay to smoke indoors (illegal in California I believe), and smoke and illegal drug? That isn’t the fun part. The defense they throw once caught is priceless. Trying to hide the joint on the floor hastily, acting like nothing happened, while the security guards watched you proudly blowing your smoke up in the air, and then trying to deny it or persuade them to “be cool man!” before they throw you out.
I love concerts for the same reason everyone else goes. Loud, stress relief, fun, can relax and not worry. Everyone needs to go to one soon, if anything for the people watching. I hope they don’t change one bit.
